Gaming and Life with My Brother

In a series of questions I received yesterday via Twitter from @MLG_Finale, I was asked quite a bit about my relationship with my brother and how our gaming relationship has evolved over time.  I answered many of his questions, however I felt it was a topic that deserved more elaborate and extensive answers.  My answers on Twitter were obviously much shorter, but here are some tweets I received from MLG_Finale:

MLG_Finale:  I believe you and your brother are on the same team correct?

Kerrington and I have been on the same team gaming competitively  for a about 10 years.  We started playing Unreal Tournament (UT99) on the SEGA Dreamcast when it released back in 2001.  My brother was actually invited to the team Violators on UT99 and I joined shortly after.  We stayed with the team until sometime in 2005 when I convinced the team to merge with the team Just Bring It, to create Violent By Instinct (vBi).  Quite a few people still associate us with Violent By Instinct, however my brother and I left vBi at the end of 2008 to create zYn Gaming (AmazYn).

MLG_Finale: What would you have done if your brother was bad?

Personally, I thought this was a very funny question, but to be honest I’m not sure.  My brother joined the team (Violators) that shaped the path to AmazYn so if he or I were not very good I imagine we would not be in the position I am in now.  We always play to be better than one another so I am not sure we would have been “bad.”

MLG_Finale: Who is younger, you or him?

My brother is younger than me.

MLG_Finale: How much did you teach and help him?

I did not really teach him how to play anything.  He taught himself how to play and got better through repetition and practice.  In games like Unreal Tournament, we would frequently play arena style 1 versus 1 and “boot camp” to try and improve – we haven’t had a game to play like that for consoles.  Other than that I might share a trick or show him a position if I found something useful which happened infrequently.

MLG_Finale: Do you and your brother fight often?

No we do not fight.  In fact, I can’t remember fighting with my brother in the last 15 years – maybe that’s a bit odd.

After a bit of questioning on my part, I found out that Finale has two brothers on his team that are constantly arguing with each other.  He was trying to get a bit of feedback from me on me and my brother’s gaming relationship.  Each family relationship is much different, I would say that we have a very unique relationship because we are very like-minded with our approach towards life and gaming.  I cannot remember arguing with my brother about anything related to competitive gaming.  We have always been focused on improving ourselves and our team and for the most part arguing does not help us in that respect.

      MLG actually provides the jerseys you see in those pictures. I actually do not know the company that creates those jerseys but I'll find out and get back to you.

    Winner: A Priest, a Minister and a Rabbi
