If you missed my live stream discussing the Multiplayer in GoWJ, this is a recap of the discussion. Despite how much I enjoy Judgment gameplay, Epic posted a podcast which confirmed my concern regarding the total number of “traditional” Multiplayer gametypes they are releasing with the launch of the game. Team Deathmatch was expected to return based on the popularity garnered from Gears of War 3 and the new gametype, Domination is very similar to what we’ve come to know as Domination in Call of Duty. I think Domination is the correct progression of King of the Hill and it will offer a compelling experience for KoTH players. That being said, I can’t help but be extremely dissatisfied and disappointed that long time fans of the series are only looking at three, traditional multiplayer gametypes to play on launch with the possibility of an event playlist entering the ranks every week.
Jim Brown did mention that it is possible for Epic to release new gametypes or re-introduce old gametypes, but that would only come in a major patch after the game’s release. If Gears of War 3 is any indication of a content specific release for Gears Judgment, the possibility of a new gametype being introduced during the lifespan of the game would be slim-to-none. OverRun offers one of the most original experiences I have encountered in a multiplayer environment and it seems more time was spent to develop and perfect that gametype instead of the others. And while I understand that the Gears 3 population statistically proved that Team Deathmatch and King of the Hill are what people “want to play”, it would have been greatly appreciated if an original, new gametype was introduced for the traditional multiplayer experience (considering the removal of DBNO).
The major concerns we discussed in the stream (found below):
- Lack of single elimination gametypes (there are none).
- Lack of more gametypes (in general) as it relates to the longevity of the game.
- Ranked and Quick Match make a return and how this will this affect matchmaking.
- The prospect of Domination as the only team-based “competitive” gametype (eSports).
- The prospect of OverRun not having Spectator mode and how that translates to the “competitive” audience (eSports).
