While I was at CES, SteelSeries announced their upcoming Spectrum 7XB Wireless headset. This is SteelSeries first wireless headset and at first glance it appears to be a wireless version of the Spectrum 5XB headset, however there are a few more differences besides the whole cordless thing. SteelSeries, like some of their competitors, is gearing towards the wireless audio experience.
Like the 5XB Headset the Spectrum 7XB headsets feature the interchangeable ear cushions, retractable mic, 50mm drivers, and can disassemble for the traveling gamers. Being that the 7XB is a wireless headset, there are accommodating changes. The headset operates on a wireless 4Mbit/s bandwith with the majority of controls located on the left earcup. The controls, five different buttons, control the following:
- ON/Off
- Volume +/- (two separate buttons)
- LiveMix
- Exact SND
SteelSeries has also enabled multiple Spectrum headset connections of up to four players at the same time. One thing I noted is that the new Exact SND feature changes the sound settings to preconfigured audio experiences. The concept sounds similar, but on a lesser scale, than the Turtle Beach PX5 customizable audio presets. SteelSeries has the three settings broken down into the following:
- Performance: for directional sounds footsteps and gunfire
- Immersion: for optimized environmental sound and game music
- Entertainment: for increased bass levels and environmental sound when watching movies
