The Details on iPhone 4

There was not much that we did not already know about the iPhone 4, but Apple still managed to amaze everyone today at the WWDC conference today.  Some of the outstanding headline features include, the high resolution screen, video chat capabilities, a new OS and a new ultra slim, sleek form.  Some of the major updates, aside from the obvious, that really set the iPhone 4 apart are detailed below.

The Body Design

Gizmodo’s leak gave plenty of details on the all new squared-off form factor, but this is really a complete overhaul from the original iPhone design.  The design is squared-off  with less curved back and well placed buttons throughout.  There is also a steel rim on the phone which is actually serves as antenna, easing previous concerns signal concerns.  Overall I think the design of the iPhone 4 looks more “powerful” versus the elegant design of previous iterations.

  • Dimensions: 4.5×2.31×0.37 inches
  • Weight: 137 grams

The screen display or Retina IPS LCD features a 326 pixels per inch and is 960×540 pixels.  These are very important pixel numbers for the resolution folks out there.   It is actually twice the resolution of the previous iPhone’s 480×320 pixel count which should bump up the number of HD apps or games available through the App store.

Face Time & Camera Info

The iPhone 4 is sporting a 5 megapixel camera, a nice upgrade from the previous 3 megapixel camera on the iPhone 3G and 3GS.  The camera has a slightly larger lens with backside illumination which should improve the low light performance.

Quite a few phones are beginning to support HD video recording, and the iPhone 4 will be no different.  It will support 720p video at 30fps.  Video editing will be available through an iMovie App ($4.99 – I know that sucks) that allows users to record, edit and share video with anyone they choose. This could be a huge hit with some of the YouTubers or bloggers that record at live events.

Face time, Apple’s name for the video chat interface, looks like it will be a great feature.  It will work from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 users on WiFi connections ONLY.  Face Time will support the front-facing and rear cameras in landscape and portrait with, again, NO 3G video calling in 2010.  They are “working with the carriers” to bring that function over hopefully within the next year.

Steve Jobs chatted with Jones Ives on the Face Time chatting option to showcase its capabilities.  The front facing camera will support 640×480. I would hope no one complains on that resolution quality because streaming video chat on a cell phone is unreal.

Under the Hood

The iPhone 4 will utilize the A4 processor chip that is expected to greatly enhance the performance of the phone.

  • 40% Battery life improvement
  • 10 hours Wi-Fi
  • 300 hours standby
  • 7 hours 3G talk
  • 6 hours 3G browsing

iPhone OS is now dubbed iOS with multi-tasking, Bing was added to search, and iBooks was added to the iPhone 4. Steve Jobs also mentioned the 6-axis gyrscope which they plan to utilize for an improved motion gaming experience.

Availability And Pricing

The iPhone 4 will be available on June 24th in 2 sizes, a 16GB and 32GB.  The 16GB will be priced at $199 and the 32GB at $299.  The 3GS will be priced at $99 while the 3G will be put out of its misery, becoming obsolete.

  • iPhone 4 16GB – $199
  • iPhone 4 32GB – $299
  • iPhone 3GS – $99

The US, Japan, UK and Germany should be grateful for the June 24th release while every other country waits until July.
