I am packed and ready to go for my trip to the MLG Nationals in Orlando, Florida this weekend. Despite some of the weather forecasts about the upcoming blizzard, I believe we have an early enough departure flight that will keep us just out of reach of the storm. This is the final event of the season and we are all pretty excited for a shot at winning $40,000, the largest first place prize for a Gears of War title on the MLG Pro Circuit. We have experienced a lot of ups and downs throughout this season including our disappointing 11th place finish at Columbus to our unprecedented 1st place finish at Dallas. It has been one emotional rollercoaster and now it all comes down to this weekend.
Leading up to this event we have been working out some of kinks from Anaheim, where we placed 3rd. Thinking back the placing isn’t that bad, but we were all disappointed because we know we are better than 3rd. Thus far, I felt the biggest improvement has been some of the reaction based strategies we have developed for this event. At Dallas and Anaheim we really set the tempo and dictated to our opponent’s how they would react to us. We noticed a number of teams, specifically The NSAN3Z, really waiting to see what we would do, so they could stun some of our rushing lanes. For the record, I think that is a horrible way to play, but it really worked well for us because we were still in an unpracticed state of mind. We really did not have the luxury to switch our play style too drastically before the event and against teams that are well practiced it shows. Going into Orlando we have mixed in a number of split second “If-Then” reaction type strategies that will hopefully make watching our usual, systematic game play more exciting.
As far as information about the actual venue itself, we’ll be staying at the Gaylord Palms Resort (pictured below). This is my third year in a row at an MLG Orlando location and my second time in the past 3 years at a Gaylord Resort. Currently, I do not have much planned for site seeing. I will probably spend some time shopping and purchasing a few gifts for family and friends. I listed a few sites that have some top Orlando attractions:
